kṛṣito nāsti durbhikshaṃ japato nāsti pātakaṃ
maunena kalahaṃ nāsti nāsti jāgarato bhayaṃ

One who works hard will have no poverty. When one labors in agriculture without laziness, there will no famine or scarcity. Being judicious in spending what is earned is also a part of this principle. When one limits expenses there will be no poverty.

Immersed in contemplation on God, when one walks the path of Dharma and is engaged in chanting and austerities, one will have no fear of sin. Sins will not even come close to him.

The one who is silent will not get into a quarrel with anyone at all. Harsh words are the root cause of all confusions and quarrels, are they not? All problems should be solved with alertness and intelligence

When one makes decisions after careful analysis and with dedication and intelligence, one will have no fear of problems and confusions whatsoever. This is what the shloka says.

The man who seeks peace and happiness should be industrious by nature, should have devotion to God and respect for Dharma, should possess self-restraint and have dedication. The person who has these four qualities will not encounter any problems.

The state of not getting anything despite intense prayers and beseeching is poverty. The one who has aplenty donates to the one who has not. But if no one has anything, one will forcefully torture and snatch from another. There will be no charities. In recent times, the city of Chennai saw devastating rains and floods inundating three fourths of the city with water. Everyone knows that even millionaires thronged for the food packets distributed by the government to sustain their lives. During such adverse times, people got together on the principle of kṛṣito nāsti durbhikshaṃ and worked hard, and restored the city to its former glory. Therefore, hard work will yield good results and prevent the suffering of poverty even in the most adverse conditions.

One who worships God at all times has no fear of sin. The mind is purified by chanting the name of God, or worshiping or observing rituals such as fasting. A pure mind gives no room for impure thoughts. Undertaking noble deeds strengthens our Sattva guna and keeps wicked thoughts away from the mind. That will remove the fear of sins. The one who does not sin is not even afraid of God. japatīti japaḥ. Always being immersed in the form of God while chanting divine names is Japa.

kalam hanīti kalahaḥ. That which disrupts the indescribable harmony that fills one’s life is called kalahaṃ (quarrel/disturbance). There is a sweet experience in life when we show respect and treat each other with love and affection. kalahaṃ is what destroys such sweet experiences and induces hatred. Such a disturbance is induced due to glances, due to actions and due to words. The disturbance inflicted due to glances may be easy to escape. The disturbances inflicted by limbs may subside in some time but what is inflicted by speech stays forever. Harshness in speech (vāk-pāruṣyam) comprises of speech that is harsh, censuring, hateful, disparaging insulting and humiliating. Such speech is the main reason for disturbances. Therefore, practicing silence will prevent such quarrels and disturbances. Silence with a smile should be the answer even when others insult or humiliate us. This will enhance our honor and respect among friends, relatives and society. People take more pride in us. Therefore, silence is the right answer to conflicts and disturbances. Every task should be done with collaboration and forethought. The flaws in the process must be unearthed and corrected. Such a person will not see defeat, this sookti teaches us.
